About the book

There once was a wise, young elephant named Tuskie who takes his little-bit rowdy but lovable crew on outer adventures around the world, only to discover something beautiful about their inner selves. Tuskie teaches them his secret secrets, which dissolve upsets so they can get back to exploring the world and feeling happy! This is a bedtime (or anytime) family storybook for kids and their:

  • Parents
  • Teachers
  • Grandparents
  • Extended Family
  • Care givers
  • Coaches
  • And everyone who interacts with a child.

Using the ideas in this book causes wellbeing.

It teaches kids:

  • How to stay feeling joyful.
  • How to de-stress when they need to.
  • How to handle challenging people, and situations (bullies, mistakes, sadness, anger, worry, fear, etc.).
  • How to stay natural, (how to stay feeling genuinely):
  • curious
  • playful
  • spontaneous
  • generous
  • affectionate
  • forgiving
  • warm-hearted
  • inclusive
  • non-judgmental
  • accepting
  • connected
  • and how to never stop belly laughing.

To live any other way is stressful and not natural.

It teaches adults:

  • How to reclaim their joyful, wise, belly-laughing nature.
  • How to parent peacefully.
  • How to teach kids to stay in or reclaim their true nature.

Kids can also read it themselves – any time they have a problem they’d like to solve or to relieve an upsetting feeling they have inside, or they can read it just for the fun of it. This book follows The Kid Code, 30 Second Parenting Strategies, which teaches parents ways to achieve peaceful and conscious parenting. The strategies in The Kid Code, give ‘right-now-relief’ in an upset, and raise awareness about how to calmly handle the challenges family life is guaranteed to bring.

During each story, your child, or family as a whole, is invited and encouraged to include a favorite animal to experience the adventure and practice the ‘secret secrets’.  The secret secrets are the strategies for staying or getting calm and joyful in any situation.

There is a note at the end of each story to help everyone in the family learn, practice, and teach the secret secrets. Share each secret secret with your child and ask them which ones makes them feel best inside. Those are the ones they can use in an upset.

Use one of the strategies in the book when any negative or upsetting state appears, and remind yourself:

  1. “I don’t want to feel like this anymore.”
  2. “This upset won’t help me, it will cause me to feel more stress unless I address it.”
  3. “I have the power to return myself to my True Nature right now.”
  4. “I can self-regulate back to joy. This upset is not the boss of me!”

The strategies in The Kid Code took the anger out of parenting for me. They’re super simple, and quick. I’m not saying this lightly - my whole parenting life changed. I now have this back-up support (The Kid Code) which gives me time in the moment to think – “Can I do this another way?” I find I catch myself just as I’m ready to bring out the ‘undertaker voice’, count to 3, order them to get to their room, or just yell at them because that seemed to work – but I had to ask myself, “Am I ruining my kids?” I knew I needed another way to parent and I found it in what I call the ‘modern’ techniques Brenda shared with me.
