The US Review of Books Recommends The Kid Code

Brenda MIller • May 10, 2022

"'My kid turned out just like me. Well played karma. Well played.'"

Miller selects principles from renowned classic and contemporary masters. She then packages them as short, digestible parenting contemplations. Masters from a wide variety of disciplines, including philosophy, biology, and psychology, are represented. These include writers such as Eckhart Tolle, Sadhguru, Wayne Dryer, and Dr. Shefali Tsabary. The exercises are formatted with a title and a quote or key point. The author then elaborates with humor and grace.

The structure is simple, easily accessed by the reader. Some might choose to read one chapter or principle at a time and practice it during the week. Others may want to read the book through, then refer to ideas that resonate with them. A few may even decide to open the book to a random page and read it. There is a myriad of resources in each chapter providing additional information. The underlying assumption is that children are not clay, meant to be crafted by parents into the desired form. Rather, the parent's task is to help reveal the full person as the child grows. Humans, from birth, are innately intelligent and inquisitive. Children can be our teachers because they play, experiencing unfiltered joy.

Miller is a smart, masterful writer with a wealth of experience teaching worldwide audiences how to live a conflict-free life. She presents the principles in a thoughtful, professional style. Her personal stories and examples bring a warm balance to the technical material. The strategies in this book are presented as a field guide that focuses on concepts any parent or caretaker can use rather than what they are lacking or what should be done. This makes the text palatable, affirming, and inspiring. Overall, Miller delivers a fun, delightful read.
